Highest temperature in Oslo in 53 years

Weather statistician showed that Monday's official high of 31.6C (nearly 89F) was the highest July temperature recorded in Oslo since 1955. A weather station in Drammen recorded an all-time national high on Monday, with 33.2C (nearly 92F) at Berskog.

Unbearable heat in Norway

Yesterday, the highest temperature was 32 C. It was above 30 C last few days. Crystal blue sky with the sun hitting hard for 14-15 hrs. Unusually hot in Lillestrøm, a suburb nearby Oslo. It is even unbearable for me (i come from a tropical country), lucky that it is not humid.

My travel from Germany-Austria-Italy during Winter (Dec) 2003

I travelled from Munich to Venice through Austria by Train during December 2003. It is only about 500km but it took me officially around 18 hrs, but as i missed one of my connecting train at Salzbrug it took 6 more hours to reach there. From Salzburg, I wrongly took a train which was heading towards Vienna which is opposite to Salzbrug. I had to get down somewhere in between to take train back to Salzbrug at dead night in severely cold weather and continue my journey. It was such a nice journey then through Alps when i saw a Austrian city through the window hundred meters down the road. I suggest people this trip. Estonished to see the treasure at Granada, Spain

Last weekend (15.12-16.12), i visited Granada, a city famour for its Historical treasure (visit http://www.turgranada.es/?id_idioma=2). I am simply amazed seeing its treasure, especially Al Hambra palace (http://www.alhambra.org/eng/index.asp?secc=/inicio&popup=1). I am in Madrid for Visiting Research

I am currently staying in Madrid to work with IBIS cluster (ibiscluster.org) of Universidad Carlos III Madrid(www.uc3m.es), Leganes, Madrid. It is a a month long visit for research.

Finding difficult to update blog

Facebook banned in workplace !!!

In the UK, the Daily Telegraph reports that:

More than two thirds of employers are banning or restricting the use of Facebook and similar sites over fears that staff are wasting time on them when they should be working, a survey found…

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said staff were not allowed to use social networking sites at work.

“Access to some websites is blocked as there is no business need for employees to access them. Facebook is one of those sites,” he said.

World's most per capita millionaires

No other country has more dollar-millionaires per capita than Norway, Roger Gullqvist of Paris-based consulting firm CapGemini. A new study compiled by CapGemini and Merrill Lynch showed that one out of every 86 Norwegians has more than USD 1 million (about NOK 5.8 million at current exchange rates) in net worth even when the net value of their primary residences is excluded. "When viewed in relation to the size of the population (around 4.6 million in Norway), there’s no other country that matches that level," Gullqvist said. Norway also has the largest number of dollar-millionaires of all the Nordic countries, which includes the three Scandinavian countries of Norway, Denmark and Sweden plus Finland and Iceland.

Heavy rains cause flood in Southern Norway

The unusually heavy rain in Southern Norway over the past week has led to flooded basements and closed roads in many places. The Oslo-Bergen railroad is blocked.
Several county roads were closed due to flood water.

We have no problem at all, came from country of floods. Only problem is we have to stay inside in short summer here.

Wettest June in Oslo

We are currently experiencing very bad summer, had rain most days in June (even now in early July). According to meteorologists, it was the rainiest June since 1883.

World's most peaceful nation among major weapon exporters

No nation in the world is advocating peace more than Norway. It has taken several peace initiatives in recent past to resolve conflicts. With only 4.5 million inhabitants, Norway is the 7th lasgest contributor to the UN systems. Noble peace prize winner is announced from Norway. International Peace Research Institute is also located in Oslo. Along with all these tremendous contributions to world's peace, Norway is now one of the world's 20 major exporters of war material. The growth of weapons export is 20 percent and US is the major buyer of Norwegian weapon materials. Isn't it interesting?

We are in unpleasant heat

Since last of couple of days we are experiencing temperature as high as 32 degree, sun shining with temperature above 25 for about 8-10 hrs (though total daytime around 18hrs). Extremely hot inside when we close window of our house. Anyone can follow real time temperature of our place below.

No doubt, Norway is alway talking about global warming. Recently Norway hosted World Environment Day 2007 in Tromsø, a very northern city of Norway. Interestingly, prime ministers (present and ex) and some leaders visited there with private jets whose per capita carbon emission is very high compare to the normal air traffic. What an irony these people talked on evironments there.

So, situation is same here as it happened in G-8 Summit in Germany.

According to UNICEF, 30,000 children die each day due to poverty. And they “die quietly in some of the poorest villages on earth, far removed from the scrutiny and the conscience of the world. Being meek and weak in life makes these dying multitudes even more invisible in death.”

* That is about 210,000 children each week, or just under 11 million children under five years of age, each year.

Now the tale of a Summit

From the 6th to 8th June, the representatives of eight of the most powerful states from the global north will be meeting in Heiligendamm, near Rostock, Germany. Without any legitimacy, they will be making decisions concerning global politics and, therefore, maintaining the state of the world, which for the majority of us means hunger, misery, war and exclusion.

AT THE G8 SUMMIT, POLITICS ARE CONCRETELY MADE AND COORDINATED; a politics in
which the interests of big business and financial investors are central.
Around the globe, the dramatic division between the rich and the poor is worsened;
accompanied by the widespread dismantling of social and democratic rights.
When the G8 talk about debt relief and aid programmes for the poor, they remain
silent about the fact that hunger, poverty and indebtedness are the result of
neoliberal, globalised capitalism. The politics of the G8 lead to the unabated
destruction of the basic requirements for human life, secures the access of a
few states to the majority of resources, and is ultimately imposed through
wars.

Cost of the Summit:
The cost to build only the security fence around the summit venue, hotels and resorts will be about 12,4 million euros.
The German authorities have mounted an extensive security operation, deploying 16,000 police to deal with the protests at a cost of 12.5 million euros (S$25.7 million). "The current official estimate is that our G8 summit in Heiligendamm will cost a round 92 million euros just for security." -- Birgit Schwebs, deputy leader of the Left Party in Mecklenburg-Western Pommerania's state parliament.

Norway the most peaceful country in the world

The first study to rank countries
around the world according to their peacefulness and the drivers that
create and sustain their peace was launched today. The Global Peace Index
studied 121 countries from Algeria to Zimbabwe and its publication comes
one week before the leaders of the world's richest countries gather for the
G8 summit in Germany to discuss issues of global concern.

Norway tops list, U.S. comes in at 96 and Iraq at the bottom.
